Where is Beşiktaş?
Beşiktaş is located on the European side of the Bosphorus, where it has an 8.4 kilometer long coast, and is neighboring Şişli and Kağıthane in the west, Beyoğlu in the southwest and Sarıyer in the north.
Where Does the Name of Besiktas Come From?
The history of the district, whose old name is "Kune Petr", dates back to ancient times. The name Kune Petr means "Stone Cradle". The first inhabitants are Thracians. The famous traveler Evliya Çelebi writes that a priest named Yaşkı, who founded a large church in the place where the city was founded, brought a stone boat in which Jesus bathed in his childhood, a cradle stone from Jerusalem and put it in the church here. On the other hand, some historians have written that Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha erected five poles on this shore to tie his ships, so this place was named FIVE-STONE (BEŞ-TAŞ), and in later dates this word was changed and became BEŞİK-TAŞ (CRADLE-STONE).
History of Besiktas
It is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Istanbul outside the city walls. It is between Tophane and Ortaköy. Besiktas is a region that has preserved its characteristics since mythological times, but it was recognized during the Byzantine period. Since Beşiktaş, which took the identity of a settlement with the Ottoman period, was a district where both state officials and ordinary people lived, there are various building types in the district. During the Ottoman period, Beşiktaş was the district of the captains. Muslims, Greeks, Armenians and a small number of Jews lived in Köyiçi, the commercial center of the district.
