Located on the Asian side of Istanbul, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is named after Sabiha Gökçen, the world's first female fighter pilot and Turkey's first female pilot. The airport has a 3-kilometer runway and provides parking space for 55 planes at the same time. In 1987, with the decision of the Defense Industry Executive Committee, it was decided to establish an "Advanced Technology Industrial Park and Civil Aviation Center" in Pendik Kurtköy. As the first step of the Advanced Technology Industrial Park and Civil Aviation Center Project, Sabiha Gökçen Airport was established on the Anatolian side of Istanbul with an annual capacity of 3 million international passengers, 500,000 domestic passengers and 90 thousand tons of cargo.
