During the Ottoman period, a water reservoir was built in what is now Taksim Square to distribute water to the surrounding neighborhoods. A small maksem was built to distribute the stored water (taksim). The square got its name from the Taksim Maxim, where Galata-Beyoğlu water used to be "distributed".

The Republic Monument, the symbol of the square, was sculpted by Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica in 2.5 years. Pink Trentino and green Suza marbles were used in the 11-meter-high sculpture, which depicts Atatürk and the new order with a figurative expression. One side of the monument symbolizes Republican Turkey and the other the War of Independence. The north side depicts Mustafa Kemal, flanked by İsmet İnönü, Fevzi Çakmak, the people and two Soviet generals Kliment Yefremoviç Voroshilov and Mikhail Vasilyeviç Frunze. The side faces depict a soldier and the medallions above them depict two female figures. The marble trough under the narrow faces of the monument was intended as a fountain, but fountains were not added later.

From Taksim Square you can cross to Istiklal Street, see the nostalgic tram and then visit the historic subway at Tunnel Square.
